The Hub Pro Electric team recently completed a technically challenging subpanel installation project for a homeowner in Acworth, Georgia.
The goal of this project was to install a new electrical subpanel in the basement. However, before the installation could begin, our electricians encountered an unusual challenge involving the home’s existing main electrical panel.
The main panel was manufactured by Challenger, an older electrical equipment brand whose original breakers are no longer commonly available through standard electrical supply stores. Because electrical panels must use breakers that are specifically listed and approved for the particular panel, finding compatible equipment was an essential part of completing this installation safely and correctly.
Finding the Correct Challenger Breakers
Sourcing the required components became one of the most challenging parts of the project. The breakers we needed were no longer readily available at typical home improvement stores or electrical supply centers.
Rather than using incompatible equipment or taking shortcuts, our team spent approximately two weeks locating the proper components through specialized electrical equipment suppliers.
Eventually, we were able to obtain the required equipment, including two tandem breakers rated at 15 and 20 amps, along with a 100-amp Challenger breaker required to supply the new subpanel.
Once all necessary components were secured, our electricians were able to move forward with the installation.
Installing the New Basement Subpanel
The appropriate breakers were installed in the existing main panel, and the new basement subpanel was carefully installed and connected.
Every part of the installation was completed with close attention to electrical safety, proper connections, and professional workmanship. Although sourcing the necessary components extended the project timeline, taking the time to locate the correct equipment allowed us to complete the installation properly rather than compromising on safety or quality.
The result was a clean and professional subpanel installation designed to provide additional electrical capacity for the basement and support the homeowner’s future electrical needs.
Next Phase of the Project
The homeowner has also requested that Hub Pro Electric return to install the individual circuit breakers inside the new subpanel. This portion of the project will be completed during the next scheduled phase.
Projects involving older electrical equipment often require additional research, troubleshooting, and specialized sourcing. At Hub Pro Electric, we believe taking the time to find the right solution is always better than using equipment that may not be appropriate for the existing electrical system.
