The Hub Pro Electric team recently completed a challenging residential smoke detector installation project in Acworth, Georgia, installing a total of 12 smoke detectors while making only two small drywall cuts in the finished areas of the home.
The homeowner was preparing to begin work on the basement, but because the house was older, there were no smoke detectors installed in several important areas of the main floor and upper level, including the areas where the bedrooms were located.
Our team was brought in to provide a complete solution, installing 12 smoke detectors throughout the home, including the bedrooms, living areas, and basement.
The Challenge: Wiring a Finished Home Without Unnecessary Drywall Damage
Installing smoke detectors during new construction is relatively straightforward because electricians have access to the framing before the walls and ceilings are closed.
This project was completely different.
The main and upper floors were already fully finished, and one of the homeowner’s biggest concerns was the possibility of extensive Sheetrock damage while running the new wiring.
Before selecting Hub Pro Electric, the homeowner had consulted with several other electricians and electrical contractors about the project.
When our team evaluated the property, we developed a wiring strategy designed to preserve the finished areas of the home as much as possible. We told the customer that we expected to complete the project with no more than four drywall openings and that, whenever possible, those openings would be placed in less visible areas such as closets.
That approach was one of the primary reasons the homeowner selected Hub Pro Electric for the project.
9 Smoke Detectors Installed With Only Two Drywall Cuts
The final result was even better than we originally anticipated.
To complete the wiring for nine of the twelve smoke detectors located on the main and upper floors, our electricians needed to make only two small Sheetrock openings.
One opening was strategically placed inside a closet, while the second was located in the laundry room.
Through careful planning, wire routing, and experienced troubleshooting, our team successfully reached the necessary locations without creating multiple openings throughout the home’s finished walls and ceilings.
For the homeowner, this meant significantly less drywall repair, less painting, less disruption, and a much cleaner overall installation.
For our electricians, it was also an extremely satisfying result considering the complexity of routing new wiring through multiple levels of an already finished home.
Careful Planning Makes the Difference
Projects like this demonstrate why experience matters when adding new electrical wiring to an existing home.
The shortest or easiest wiring route for an electrician isn’t always the best solution for the homeowner. Cutting multiple access holes might make the electrical work faster, but it can leave the customer with additional drywall repairs, painting, expense, and inconvenience after the electricians leave.
At Hub Pro Electric, we take the time to look for better solutions.
Whenever conditions allow, our electricians carefully evaluate existing framing, accessible areas, closets, utility spaces, and potential wiring routes before making unnecessary openings in finished surfaces.
In this case, that extra planning allowed us to complete a complicated multi-level installation while preserving nearly all of the home’s finished walls and ceilings.
Two Days of Detailed Electrical Work
The project required approximately two full working days to complete.
Despite extremely hot weather and the complexity of routing wiring throughout the property, our team remained focused on workmanship, cleanliness, and minimizing disruption inside the customer’s home.
Once the installation was completed, the homeowner was extremely pleased—not only with the new smoke detectors, but especially with how little drywall had to be opened to complete the work.
The result exceeded the customer’s expectations and even exceeded our original estimate of how many access openings might be necessary.
